Quercetin may increase the levels of apixaban (Eliquis) in your blood. This can make your blood too thin and significantly increase your risk of serious bleeding, such as bruising easily, nosebleeds, or internal bleeding.

Why this happens
Apixaban is cleared from the body by a protein called P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and an enzyme called CYP3A4. Quercetin can block both of these, which stops the body from breaking down the medication properly, leading to a buildup of the drug.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should avoid taking quercetin supplements while taking apixaban. If you are already taking both, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before stopping or changing your dose. Seek immediate medical help if you notice signs of bleeding, such as blood in your urine, black tarry stools, or coughing up blood.
