Taking magnesium at the same time as alendronic acid can stop your body from absorbing the alendronic acid properly. This means the medicine may not work as well to strengthen your bones and prevent fractures.

Why this happens
Alendronic acid is very sensitive to minerals like magnesium. When they meet in the stomach, the magnesium binds to the alendronic acid, creating a large 'clump' that the body cannot absorb into the bloodstream.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou must separate these two medicines. Take your alendronic acid first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a full glass of plain water. Wait at least 30 minutes (though 2 hours is even better) before taking any magnesium supplements, antacids containing magnesium, or eating any food.
