Both amlodipine and olmesartan (the active ingredient in Olmetec/Omersaten) are used to lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause your blood pressure to drop lower than it would with either medicine alone. This can sometimes lead to dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint, especially when you stand up quickly.

Why this happens
These drugs work in different ways to relax your blood vessels: amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker and olmesartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Because they both target the cardiovascular system to reduce pressure, their effects are additive (they add together).
What you should do
Back to contentsThis is a very common and intentional combination used to treat high blood pressure. You should continue taking your medication as prescribed, but be careful when standing up from a sitting or lying position. If you feel very dizzy, have a persistent headache, or feel like you might faint, contact your doctor. Your doctor may want to monitor your kidney function and blood pressure more closely when you first start this combination.
