Can I take Azathioprine and Diltiazem together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking diltiazem alongside azathioprine may increase the risk of side effects from azathioprine, particularly a drop in your white blood cell count. This can make you more likely to pick up infections. It may also increase the risk of anaemia (low red blood cells) or bruising.

Why this happens

Diltiazem can slow down the liver's ability to process certain medications. This can lead to higher levels of azathioprine (and its active components) staying in your bloodstream for longer than intended.

You can usually take these medicines together, but your doctor should monitor you more closely. You will likely need more frequent blood tests to check your blood cell counts (FBC) and liver function. If you develop a fever, sore throat, unexplained bruising, or feel unusually tired, contact your doctor immediately.
