Can I take Citalopram and Magnesium together?

Drug interaction guide

There is no significant interaction between citalopram and standard magnesium supplements. However, very high doses of magnesium (often found in certain laxatives or antacids) could potentially affect how citalopram is processed by the body, though this is rarely a concern at normal nutritional doses.

Why this happens

Citalopram is an antidepressant (SSRI) and magnesium is a mineral. They do not typically interfere with each other's absorption or effectiveness. There is a theoretical, very minor risk that extremely high magnesium levels could influence heart rhythms, which citalopram can also affect, but this is not a practical concern for most people taking standard supplements.

It is generally safe to take these together. Stick to the recommended daily allowance of magnesium. If you are taking magnesium for a specific medical condition or using high-dose magnesium laxatives frequently, mention this to your doctor or pharmacist. Always space your supplements and medications by a couple of hours if you experience any stomach upset.
