Taking citalopram and simvastatin together may slightly increase the levels of simvastatin in your blood. This can increase the risk of side effects, particularly muscle pain or weakness.

Why this happens
Both drugs are processed by the liver. Citalopram can mildly interfere with the enzymes (specifically CYP3A4 and CYP2C19) that break down simvastatin, leading to a small rise in simvastatin levels.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou can usually take these together, but you should be aware of the signs of 'statin' side effects. If you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, contact your doctor. Your doctor may choose to monitor you more closely or adjust your simvastatin dose if you are on a high dose (such as 80mg).

Taking sertraline and citalopram together significantly increases the risk of a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome. This happens when there is too much of the chemical serotonin in your brain. There is also an increased risk of a specific heart rhythm problem called QT prolongation, which can cause fainting or palpitations.

This occurs when there is too much of a chemical called serotonin in your brain. Symptoms can include feeling very agitated, confused, or shaky, as well as sweating, a fast heartbeat, muscle twitching, or diarrhoea. In rare cases, this combination can also increase the risk of having a seizure (a fit).
