Why this happens
Sertraline (an SSRI antidepressant) and iron (a mineral) are processed by the body through different pathways. Sertraline is broken down by the liver, while iron is absorbed in the gut and managed by blood proteins. They do not compete for absorption or metabolism.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou can take these medications together. However, iron supplements can sometimes cause stomach upset or constipation, which are also potential side effects of sertraline. If you experience these issues, try taking your iron with food (unless your doctor has told you otherwise) or at a different time of day than your sertraline to help your stomach settle.

Important precautions
Back to contentsAccidental overdose in children
Iron supplements are a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children. You must store them in a secure place out of the reach and sight of children.
Bleeding risk
Sertraline increases your risk of bleeding. You must seek medical advice before taking it with anti-inflammatory painkillers (like ibuprofen or aspirin) or blood-thinning medications.
Interaction with other medicines
Iron can stop other medicines from working. You must leave a gap of at least 2 hours between taking iron and other medications, particularly antibiotics or thyroid hormones.
Food and drink warnings
Back to contentsTea and Coffee (Caffeine)
Tea and coffee contain compounds called tannins and polyphenols that significantly reduce the amount of iron your body absorbs. Avoid drinking tea or coffee for at least one hour before or two hours after taking your iron supplement.
Dairy products (Milk, Cheese, Yoghurt)
Calcium in dairy products prevents the absorption of iron. Do not take your iron supplement at the same time as dairy products. Leave a gap of at least two hours between them.
Eggs and Whole-grain cereals
These foods contain phytates or proteins that can bind to iron and stop it from being absorbed properly. It is best to take iron on an empty stomach, though you can eat a small amount of food (avoiding dairy/tea) if it upsets your stomach.
Alcohol
You should avoid drinking alcohol while taking sertraline. Alcohol can increase the sedative effects of the medication, making you feel more drowsy, dizzy, or uncoordinated.
Grapefruit juice
Grapefruit juice can increase the levels of sertraline in your blood, which may increase the risk of side effects. It is best to avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.

Can I take Devil's claw and Ginger together?
Taking devil's claw and ginger together may increase your risk of bruising or bleeding. Both of these herbal supplements have natural blood-thinning properties. While the risk is generally low for healthy individuals, it becomes more significant if you are already taking blood-thinning medications or have an upcoming surgery.

Can I take Alcohol and Rosuvastatin together?
Drinking alcohol while taking rosuvastatin can increase the risk of liver problems and a rare but serious muscle condition called rhabdomyolysis. While a small amount of alcohol is usually fine, heavy or regular drinking makes side effects much more likely.
