Why this happens
Bupropion is known to lower the 'seizure threshold', meaning it makes it slightly easier for a seizure to occur. While pregabalin is often used to treat seizures, combining it with drugs that have this effect requires caution. Additionally, both drugs can have sedating effects on the brain that add together.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should use these medications together only under close medical supervision. If you have a history of seizures or head injury, tell your doctor before starting this combination. Avoid activities requiring mental alertness, such as driving, until you know how these medicines affect you. Seek immediate medical help if you experience a seizure, confusion, or severe dizziness.

Important precautions
Back to contentsMental health disorders
Both medicines can cause suicidal thoughts or an urge to self-harm. You must seek medical help immediately if your mood changes or you have thoughts of hurting yourself.
Seizure disorders
Wellbutrin significantly increases the risk of seizures (fits). You must not take it if you have epilepsy, a history of seizures, or an active eating disorder (bulimia or anorexia nervosa), as these conditions further increase the risk.
Severe respiratory depression
Pregabalin can cause serious breathing problems, especially if you already have lung disease or if you take it with other sedating medicines like opioids. Seek emergency help if you experience slow, shallow, or difficult breathing.
Pregnancy
Pregabalin use during the first three months of pregnancy may increase the risk of birth defects. Effective contraception must be used during treatment.
Drug dependence and withdrawal
Pregabalin carries a risk of dependence and addiction. Do not stop taking it suddenly, as this can cause severe withdrawal symptoms such as seizures or anxiety.
Food and drink warnings
Back to contentsAlcohol
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking these medicines. Combining alcohol with pregabalin increases the risk of severe drowsiness and breathing difficulties. Combining alcohol with Wellbutrin significantly increases the risk of having a seizure. If you are a heavy drinker, do not stop drinking suddenly before starting Wellbutrin, as this also increases seizure risk.
Caffeine (Coffee, Tea, Energy Drinks)
Wellbutrin is a stimulant. Consuming high amounts of caffeine can increase the risk of side effects such as anxiety, tremors, palpitations, and insomnia. It may also lower your seizure threshold.
